6 June 2013 - Period Style Draught Kits

Draughts are a perennial problem for some houses and we're all familiar the metal retro-fit
draught excluder kits that are available - usually in finishes of brass or aluminium.

While reasonably effective, they don't necessarily bring anything positive to the aesthetics
of the door - as you can see below.

We have something that may be of help - period style timber profile draught kits.

These are machined from solid softwood, hardwood or oak and can be painted or stained
to match the existing frame.

The hard wearing gasket consits of a resilient HDPE skin covering a low density polyurethane
core and incorporates a PE re-enforcer to aid retention. It is available in brown or white.

Contrary to popular belief (and hopes), fitting a new door to an old frame doesn't automatically
reduce the draught problem. In some cases it can even make it worse.

The reason for this is that a house will have settled over time and the door frame will have
moved with it. Because the door is attached to the frame on the hinge side and held in place
by the lock/latch on the other, the door will have moved too.

When a new door is fitted, it will be perfectly straight (or, if it isn't, I'll have a word with the joiner
who made it) so will fit only where it first touches the frame. This is why the draught problem
can be made worse.

We don't like to disturb the fabric of a building any more than is absolutely necessary and this is
why we won't replace frames unless there is good reason.

Rather than spend £200.00 or more on a new frame, these draught kits start at just £40.00 and
will solve the vast majority of draught issues.

Below are photos from a recent installation where we fitted a new door to an existing frame.
The old metal strips (seen in the first picture above) have been removed and the period style
timber draught kit installed

Once painted, it becomes indistinguishable from the rest of the frame and the profile
even makes a pleasing addition

The standard kits consist of 2 x 2.1m lengths for the frame legs and 1 x 1m length for the frame head.
Longer lengths are available and we would be pleased to quote for your
custom requirements.

Prices, including VAT are:

Softwood - £40.00
Hardwood - £48.00
European Oak - £60.00

Unfortunately, ParcelFarce don't seem to like getting these to our customers in one piece (or even
the 3 pieces they leave here in) so we have to sell them as collect only.

We could send them with the same dedicated courier company who deliver our doors however
they have a minimum charge of £ 45.00 which makes it rather expensive.

How's this for an imposing door knocker?

This unique plaque mounted design is from a European manufacturer, new to the UK.

The quality of their products is without question however the price may come
as a bit of a shock - £699.00 for this example.

Still, it's nice to be different!

We have just completed a bespoke commission for one of our trade customers and here's the result! The beautiful grain of European oak works so well with the delicate carved detail in the top rail.

A perfect finish for this door would be Dulux "Naked Wood". We recommend this system as it brings out the
grain detail of oak wihout darkening the timber thus allowing the natural beauty to shine through.

We're really pleased with it and hope you like it too!
